Police officer receiving treatment at hospital stabs two patients

A police officer admitted to Bondo Sub-County Hospital in Siaya County allegedly attacked and stabbed two fellow patients in the male ward late Tuesday night, prompting an urgent investigation by authorities.

The officer, attached to Aram Police Station in Rarieda Sub-County, was reportedly undergoing treatment for an undisclosed illness before the violent outburst.

According to hospital staff, the attack occurred around midnight when screams erupted from the male ward.

Nurses and a clinical officer rushed to the scene, where they found the officer had already stabbed a 14-year-old boy in the neck and a 20-year-old man in the chest.

The assailant, armed with a knife, was reportedly advancing toward a third patient when additional staff and security guards intervened, disarming and subduing him.

Siaya County Police Commander Serah Koki confirmed the incident, stating the officer was swiftly handed over to colleagues summoned to the scene.

“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has taken over the case to determine the motive and appropriate legal action,” Koki said.

She emphasized that the officer’s mental state and circumstances leading to the attack are under scrutiny.

The 20-year-old victim, critically injured in the chest, was transferred for X-ray examinations to assess internal damage.

The teenage boy, stabbed in the neck, remains hospitalized for further treatment. Both are reported to be in stable condition as of Wednesday morning.

The incident has raised concerns about security in healthcare facilities, particularly involving armed officers receiving treatment.

Hospital authorities have not yet commented on whether the officer’s weapon was brought into the facility undetected. Local residents expressed shock, with community leaders calling for enhanced safety protocols to protect patients and staff.

As the DCI probes the attack, questions linger about the officer’s abrupt violence and the adequacy of hospital security measures.

The case underscores broader challenges in managing conflicts involving law enforcement personnel, even in medical settings. Updates will follow as the investigation progresses.
