5 Simple Steps to Peeling a Pomegranate

Step 1: Gather Your Tools

The water will help separate the seeds from the pith and prevent the juice from staining your hands and clothes.

Step 2: Score the Pomegranate

Place the pomegranate on the cutting board. Use the knife to cut off the crown (the top part of the pomegranate). Then, score the skin of the pomegranate by making shallow cuts from the top to the bottom, following the natural ridges of the fruit. Be careful not to cut too deep; you just want to cut through the skin and not into the seeds.

Step 3: Break Open the Pomegranate

Once you’ve scored the skin, gently pull the pomegranate apart into sections. The pomegranate should break open easily along the lines where you scored it. You’ll now have several manageable pieces to work with.

Step 4: Separate the Seeds

Hold one of the pomegranate sections over the bowl of water. Gently press the edges to loosen the seeds, then use your fingers to gently nudge the seeds out of the pith and into the water. The seeds will sink to the bottom while the pith floats to the top, making it easy to separate the two.

Step 5: Strain and Enjoy

Once you’ve removed all the seeds, skim off the pith that’s floating on the surface of the water. Then, pour the seeds through a strainer to remove the water. Your pomegranate seeds are now ready to eat or use in your favorite recipe!
